Life in Our Gilded Cage depicts the conundrum of being a Queenslander in 2021. We observed from the beach, as the world and southern states went crazy with COVID.

Globally commentators at the Washington Post marvelled at the gilded cage as COVID Paradise and The Times described our gilded cage as Fortress Australia when Brisbane locked down for 4-Delta cases. Locally they mused at The High Cost of Life in our Gilded Cage, and Vaccination the Only Way for Australia to Escape its ‘Gilded Cage’.

“A bird in a gilded cage” lives a life of health, wealth, and luxury, but without true freedom. In Queensland, we have been particularly privileged and protected, with very few sick or dying, and leading what feels like a normal life. But at the same time, we have been locked in, and not allowed to leave. At some point, we must become free, and live with the vulnerabilities that freedom brings.
